The artist's story behind the design
When our family moved to the scenic hill country of Southeast Minnesota and found our fixer-upper small farm, the beauty of the landscape welcomed us and so did many of our Scandinavian community. I fondly remember a retired farm couple who lived just over the hill in a brick farm home painted white. They were kind and genuine folks, and both of them made a way to make our family feel welcome to the area. They invited us into their home for many occasions to visit, play music, share a meal together, and even watch a little Wheel of Fortune. Over the years we chatted about many things we had in common including gardening, farm animals, and food. It was no secret that Anna made the best rice pudding in the neighborhood and after years of enjoying it at the neighborhood Summer picnic, my wife Joyce finally had the courage to ask Anna for her recipe. She shared it generously and I think she was flattered to be asked. From Norris’s barn cats and begonias to Anna’s rice pudding and lefse, we became good friends and we miss them still. This is why I added the recipe on the back of “Tending the Homestead” because it will always remind me of our good friends and neighbors.
